Framasoft is a network of popular education, originating from the educational world and initially dedicated to free and open source software. Our non-profit organization has 3 main goals:

• promote, spread and develop free and open source software
• extend and promote free culture in the largest sense
• online free and open source services

Framasoft relies almost exclusively on gift economy. We are independent and are accountable to our donators and contributors only.

Framasoft started in 2001, with a public and collaborative online directory of Free and Open source Software for Education. Framasoft became an association in 2004 and dedicated its directory only to Free Softwares for every operating systems. Thanks to the energy of contributors, permanent and non-permanent members and thanks to every donations, Framasoft is nowadays a network of several Free projects with 3 main topics : Free Software, Free Culture, online Free web services.

Framasoft gathers everyone who participated and participate directly or indirectly to the different projects. To structure it all, Framasoft is based on a non-profit organisation from the public interest. Now, it's its responsibility to make it work smoothly and be sure that the community can help in the best possible conditions. There is three permanent members of staff and is mainly financed thanks to the individuals donations collected on the Internet.

Framasoft homepage displays several panels introducing its 3 main ranges of activity: software, culture, services.

A navigation toolbar (we call it Framanav) makes it easier to switch from one site to another according to your needs.

A free software offers and ensures freedoms of use, study, modification and copy in order to share it (freely or not).

This is allowed technically by getting and reading the source code, and legally thanks to the free licence attached to the software. These four freedoms encourage transparency, trust, exchange, share and collaboration in communities.

Framasoft offers a directory, USB keys, DVDs and a Windows installer in order to discover free softwares and use them frequently.

Thanks to the Internet and to the digitization, the « free culture » is a moving culture directly inspired from the Free software for its philosophy and its licenses in order to promote et spread intellectual creations.

It's exploring a lot of different fields such as art, education, sciences, materials… These works could be considered as common goods. The most representative example is the free encyclopedia Wikipedia.

From 2011 on Framasoft provides to the general public a series of free online services which are respectful of personal data and privacy. On September 2014, considering the huge success of some services, we decided to offer alternative services to popular but proprietary services that are centralized and tracking users' data on the Internet. Framasoft is now involved in a long-distance huge project called : Dégooglisons Internet (let's Ungooglize Internet).

Framasoft proposition sounds simple : for every proprietary service, we highlight and promote a Free, Libre, Ethical, Decentralized and Solidary service. Of course we wish not to take the monopoly over existing ones, but we want to demonstrate as a proof of concept that free and respectful alternatives exist, are reliable and can be spread en partageant les connaissances so that they can reach the general public.

October : launching of the campaign « Degooglize the Internet ». This campaign marks a turning point for Framasoft as it's aiming, for the long term, to center the use and the spreading of free softwares, ethical, decentralized and united, against the GAFAM.

May : Framasoft participate actively to the organization and the activity of « Vosges Free Operation » in Gérardmer. The Free Operations aim to gather, during a week end, different stakeholders of the Free Software community in order to initiate the process in favor of the open datas in small cities and towns, by presenting the availables tools, especially the free softwares.

April : Framasoft reorganize its fields of activity with a three-part work : softwares, culture and free services. The landing page is updated.

February : « Liberty Pack », common support campaign of April, Framasoft and La Quadrature du Net.

October : Putting online different projects : Framacalc, Framindmap and Framavectoriel.

November : Framasoft is launching its 2013 support campaign.

November : Putting online the Framazic project.

December : « Liberty Pack 2 », new common support campaign with April, Framasoft and La quadrature du Net.

TO CONTINUED Framasoft entame une nouvelle réorganisation et intègre l'hébergement de services libres, sur la base de logiciels libres ouverts au grand public. L'objectif est d'encourager leur dissémination tout en offrant au public des alternatives fonctionnelles et crédibles aux services gratuits offerts par des multinationales bien connues.

Mars : Mise en ligne du projet Framapad.

Juin : Sortie du projet Framadate.

Janvier : Mise en ligne du projet Framapack.

Octobre : Pour faire face à un besoin de plus en plus important en termes d'infrastructure et de salaires, l'association lance la campagne de soutien « 1000 10 1 » dont l'objectif est de trouver mille donateurs à dix euros par mois pendant un an.

Octobre : Sortie d'une version école du Framadvd, projet mené par Cyrille Largillier18.

Janvier : mise en place d'un site de soutien à Framasoft visant à recueillir des dons et des témoignages.

Février : Naissance du projet vidéo Framatube.

Mai : Sortie du DVD Framadvd, projet réalisé avec des étudiants en Master 2 Communication et multimédia de l'université Paris II17.

Framasoft reçoit le Lutèce d'Or de la meilleure action communautaire menée lors de Paris Capitale du Libre¹⁾

L'année 2006 consolide l'existant et initie des projets de diffusion de culture libre. En mai, le projet Framabook voit le jour avec le premier volume de la collection Utilisez Thunderbird 1.5 écrit par Georges Silva. En septembre, le Framablog voit le jour et présente des contenus originaux mais aussi des traduction issues du projet Framalang lancé officiellement en octobre.

En décembre 2006, Framasoft héberge et soutien son premier site partenaire Veni Vidi Libri

Réorganisation et création de l'Association Framasoft²⁾. L'annuaire renonce aux logiciels gratuits et ne se restreint plus aux logiciels sous Windows. Il devient un projet collaboratif rédigé à plusieurs mains parmi lesquelles Thomas Cézard, Simon Leblanc, Paul Lunetta, Rui Nibau et Georges Silva.

Framagora connaît un pic de fréquentation en tant que principal forum de suivi de la loi DADVSI.

Framasoft entreprend de proposer des outils libres originaux. Le premier d'entre eux : la version originale de la Framakey et création du site associé sous l'impulsion de Pierre-Yves Gosset.

Traduction française de TheOpenCD 2.0, CD compilation de logiciels libres sous Windows. Il paraît dans un hors série du mois de juin 2005 du magazine Freelog et sera proposé sur le site de vente par correspondance Ikarios de Nat Makarevitch.

Framasoft s'oriente définitivement vers le grand public, non seulement dans le but de promouvoir le logiciel libre, mais aussi pour devenir un lieu de partage de connaissances. Naissance du forum Framagora administré par Thierry Bernard.

Framasoft s'ouvre plus largement aux contributeurs et intègre des tutoriels et une tribune libre.

Naissance du site Framasoft.net créé par le professeur de mathématiques Alexis Kauffmann. Le nom dérive de Framanet (pour FRAnçais et MAthématiques en intraNET), projet éducatif interdisciplinaire co-réalisé avec Caroline d'Atabekian, professeur de lettres, au sein d'un collège de Seine-Saint-Denis³⁾, dont Framasoft a d'abord été une rubrique logicielle avant de devenir indépendant⁴⁾. Le site n'est encore qu'un site personnel et se présente comme un annuaire de logiciels libres et gratuits sous Windows. Il est statique et est hébergé par la société Amen.

Réunie en assemblée générale les 20-22 décembre 2014, l'association Framasoft a décidé d'une nouvelle structure administrative démocratique composée du Conseil d'administration et des comités : comité directeur (2 à 5 co-présidents), comité technique, comité ressources humaines, comité juridique, comité trésorerie et finances, comité stratégique, comité partenariats, etc.

Framasoft has projects aiming at the whole French-speaking community worldwide and possibly other languages and countries. Headquarters of our association are in Lyon, France with at least one permanent employee. Framasoft members and contributors are mainly French.
